We start with Jesus’ words which I assume point to the things important to God.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16 NIV
This is probably the most quoted verse from the Bible. It is Jesus explaining to Nicodemus why Jesus, himself came to earth and what he plans to do. This is the testimony of Jesus concerning what God loves and how he plans to fix things on earth.
God created this world and everything that is in it. Beginning with a paradise of the Garden of Eden and Adam. God made only one rule in this first paradise. Genesis 2:16-17 says, And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Then God made Eve. She was tempted by the serpent to break the one rule by eating the fruit of the tree of good and evil. She gave some fruit to Adam, and he also ate. This disobedience by Eve and Adam brought suffering and death into the world. It was the first sin.
When this happened, God cursed the serpent, believed by many theologians to be satan. Genesis 3:15 says, “And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
Eve’s sin caused her to be cursed by God with pain in childbirth and for her husband to rule over her. Adam’s sin caused the ground to be cursed by God to bring forth thorns and thistle. Adam would spend the rest of his days working a cursed ground to produce food to eat. Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden and its gate was closed forever.
God is all knowing. He knew the future of the world for thousands of years before He created it. He knew Adam and Eve would disobey him. He knew that by giving humanity a choice to obey or disobey, that they would turn from God and follow their own hearts. He knew He was creating a stiff-necked humanity. He is a God who created a world of people behaving like so many disobedient children. Children who must be watched over and taught how to behave, how to love, how to do what is right. When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, God did bring curses upon humanity. But in His love and grace He laid the prophecy for a coming Messiah. Through several thousand years God talked and persuaded many people to listen to God’s wise counsel. He dealt with many disobedient and evil people, who refused God’s rule over then. All through this time
God spoke of the future coming Messiah. The one called Jesus. The Prince of Peace described in Isaiah 9:6. The one who would give his life as an atonement for all the sins of stiff-necked humanity, Romans 3:25. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are offered salvation from ourselves and our ways. We are offered the very mind of Christ, I Corinthians 2:16, and the fruit of the indwelling Holy Spirit to guide us from the inside out. The love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control of the Holy Spirit of God lives inside those who accept Jesus as their Savior, Galatians 5:22-23. God still talks to us and guides us through pray and Bible reading. But now we also have His power to help change us from the inside out. Our stiff-necks can become softened hearts, and compassionate souls who feel the love for others that God has always felt for us. We now are given the opportunity to know love as God knows love.
When Adan and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of good and evil, they began a long journey of knowing many things. They did not have the experience or understanding to control this knowledge to benefit themselves or those around them They were but small children holding a knife which can be used to prepare food to nourish the body or used to stab and harm themselves and others. God knew they needed more than knowledge. They needed God’s presence deeply inside their hearts, souls, and minds. They needed God’s understanding of love. grace, justice, patience, and joy.
The most important commandment God gave after the fall of humanity is found written in the bible several times. Spoken by Jesus
Matthew 22: 37-39,
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
Mark 12 :29-31
And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Luke 10:27
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.
Deuteronomy 6:5
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
God wants more for humanity than knowing the difference between good and evil, because good and evil is frequently in the eyes of the beholder. Children often claim to hate their parents because of terrible things such as bedtime, doing homework now, or no more sweets rules. Adults frequently argue and claim to hate others for being different in fashion, drinking, sexual ideas, and traffic violations. Who has never been furious at the boss setting a ridiculous deadline that required you to work overtime after the boss went home? Our perspectives on who is the bad guy can change when we receive more information about the situation. We all have moments in life when we realize we are wrong and need to change our opinions. We are all limited humans who frequently make mistakes.
God wants a better life for us, than relying on our knowledge and experiences concerning good and evil. John 17 has a long pray spoken by Jesus before His crucifixion. In he repeats these types of phrases.
- Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.
- so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.
- that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you
- that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity.
- that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.
God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are one. They exist in complete unity and love for each other. Even though God describes himself as one, he also exist as three different personalities with different purposes and behaviors. Each created human person is one. We can only be one. We cannot physically be in two places at the same time. We rarely can manage more than one conversation at a time. God is not like us. Though we were made in his image, he is very much more than we are. He is capable of knowing all 8 billion people living in this world. He calls each one by name. He can talk to 8 billion people simultaneously and make each feel as if they are the only one he is giving his attention.
God wants to share a part of his love and wisdom with us. He gives to all who will accept Jesus as their savior. He gives himself to live inside us to change us from the inside out. To change us from arguing over our differences. To being able to love each other and walk together regardless of our differences. We do not need to rely on each other’s knowledge and wisdom to help us in our lives. We can rely on God to teach and lead us. To change us for the better. To help us learn how to meet our needs and to help other people meet their needs. We can learn to walk in love and unity with people very different from us without fear and judgement. Because God has given us the ability to exist in love and unity with other people as he exists in love and unity within himself.
Unfortunately, this heavenly solution only works for those that are willing to accept God as Lord over their lives. There are some people who cling desperately to their own knowledge and refuse to let God into their lives. Even some professing Christians, walk on earth with their eyes closed and their ears stopped up. Jesus spoke several times about people’s eyes as a metaphor for a willingness to understand the things from God.
Matthew 13:15
For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
Mark 8:18
Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?
John 12:40
“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.”
Even though God is the God of love and the Prince of Peace, there are things he hates.
There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:
- haughty eyes,
- a lying tongue,
- hands that shed innocent blood,
- a heart that devises wicked schemes,
- feet that are quick to rush into evil,
- a false witness who pours out lies and
- a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
There is evil in this world. The evil of turning away from God and the evil of refusing to listen to God. There is also evil chosen by people’s egos to rule over others rather than letting God be their ruler. Some evil is buried into hearts and souls by circumstances of war, abuse, hatred, ignorance, and other acts committed by people in their lives. Satan has many manipulations and tricks to lead people astray and prevent them from seeing the love God offers.
ohn 3:16 states that Jesus did not come into the world to condemn the world but to save the world. We who follow Jesus need to remember that we are to be like Jesus and choose not to condemn others in the world but learn to love them as God loves them. Learn to grow in spiritual maturity and knowledge of God that we may be a shining light in a dark world. Learn to spread the irresistible love of God to all the struggling people who need the hope of Christ in their lives.
Colossians 1:27
To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
